Post subject:  Re: [b]Bellett model & chassis *now with Florian/117 info*[/

i mentioned the Florian and 117 Coupe in the Bellett mega-post i did a while back, but at that point, i hadn't chased any further info.
until now. i thought as we have at least 1 Flo in our corner of the inter-web, and some Bellett enthusiasts are keenly on the look out for more, i'd see what i could find.
this is only a small starter, and i'll try and find more as i go.

the Florian was built between 1967 and 1983. It was built in both 4 door sedan and 4 door station wagon body styles, although the wagon was dropped in the early 1970's, with only the sedan continuing on. it replaced the Bellel as Isuzu's mid-range sized car, and was itself replaced by the Isuzu Aska (we aussies know this as the Holden Camira).
the Florian kept the same design of body, layout, etc, throughout it's 16 year run (very unusual indeed!), and only had 2 significant updates to change some of it's appearance, using the normal "grille, headlights, tailights" type of changes.
as for running gear changes..... i'm yet to confirm details, so i'll keep u informed.
a further point, the 117 Coupe used the entire Florian floor pan, suspension layout, brakes, running gear, etc, throughout it's model run as well. think of the 117 as the hotted up 2 door coupe version of the Florian sedan.
the 117 was built between 1968 and 1981. it was designed by famed Italian designer Giugiaro in 1966, making it one of Japan's first Italian designed cars. it had no predecessor, and was replaced by the Isuzu Piazza.
the 117 only had 1 major update during it's life, when in 1977, the 4 round headlights front was replaced by 4 square headlights, along with a number of other changes in other areas across the car.

Florian models:
PA20 - 1600.
PA30 - 1800.
PAD20 - 1800 diesel.
117 models:
PA90.
PA95.
PA96.
the 117 used engine capacities from 1600 to 2000, in both SOHC and DOHC configurations. i'll work out what model prefix was which engine as i progress with more info.
*EDIT:
PA90 - 1600.
PA95 - 1800.
PA96 - 2000.
the 117 used a variety of different engines thru this time, including the W series DOHC, the S series SOHC and the Z series Gemini style SOHC.... now I've got to work out what model code each style had that related to each engine! it just never ends....

total Florian build (1967-1983) 145,836. this number is the total number conbined for sedans and wagons.
total 117 build (1968-1981) 86,192. this number is the total for both the pre 'GM takeover' 1973 semi hand-built cars, and the post 1973 mass produced cars.

i know that there were different spec levels in the Florian range, like 'deluxe', 'DS', 'TS', etc., and i'll endeavour to find out as much info as possible on these, as well as finding some further model and spec info on the 117 for further Florian/117 comparison data.... when time permits!!

cheers.

All fascinating info guys. An interesting education for me (Mr. Green) as previously only knew that PR91's and GTtoo's GT's came off the production line almost together, at least on the same day. (Must have been a good day !!)

Many thanks Brett, Dave, ala amazing research.

That puts things into even more perspective PR91 (for a novice),

The florian to the 117 coupe, had the same relation to their predeccesors, as the bellett sedan and GT in other words. Am I surprised at the ingenius interchangability ?!?

I had also heard of the italian connection in a previous thread. The next generation of PR is PA.

Dave would be stoked with that research,

B.

Hey PR91, do you have info on the spec levels for 117's at all? A bit off the Bellett topic but I keep seeing them as XD or XT and I can't work out which is the base model and which is the top!

Cheers,
R.

Hey Brett just a little brain picking, do you know if all PR95 had the large square tail lights? mine has same grill as PR91 twin headlights, and square tail lights. 1800 sohc. Don't know if you want to keep no's.

Hey Geoff, from my brochures i can say the big legoland tail lights and pr95 chassis prefix also corresponded with the update to the grey plastic mask front.

Sound about right Brett?

Post subject:  Re: Bellett model updates & corresponding chassis numbers

I have established that it is a '72 model, and had a guy out to inspect it last Friday, to have it complied to ADR, and apparently the rules are different for '70 '71 and '72. anyway, all has ended up not to bad, main concerns are Seatbelts and Mirrors and rear indicators. Should be complied soon.
Geoff.

What's with the blinkers? Are they red or something?

Author:  PR95 [ Mon Nov 07, 2011 6:50 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Bellett model updates & corresponding chassis numbers

Yes, they are both red lenses, outer one is tail and blinker, inner tail and stop with reverse light in middle.

Damn; what can you do about it. Was there an orange lens that fits? I've not noticed and haven't got my brochures nearby to check!

Post subject:  Re: Bellett model updates & corresponding chassis numbers

Brett, did the SOHC engine come in 1600 and also 1800cc versions?

I have seen a Pr50 (ad) sport sedan of 1969 which claims a 1800cc SOHC

Post subject:  Re: Bellett model updates & corresponding chassis numbers

yep, sure did.

my documentation says they went from OHV 1600 to SOHC 1600 in Sept. '69, just 1 month the release of the PR91W GT-R.
the PR60 1800 appeared in Oct '71, and for whatever reason were sold side by side.
a PR50 should be a 1600, and a PR60 is an 1800.
the PR50 and PR60 were the last Belletts, and the wound up in Oct '73.

not all were the "Sport" tho, althought alot are claimed to be.
this was an option on any sedan at the time of sale, and when optioned saw alot of GT parts fitted to a sedan body.
and they were both available in 2 and 4 door style.

and don't believe the myth that a 2 door sedan is automatically a "Sport" either, because that isn't the case in all body styles and engine capacities!

The PR50 i saw is a 69 model. Has SOHC, apparently a 1600 from your info then.

Post subject:  Re: Bellett model updates & corresponding chassis numbers

Does anyone know if this information applies world wide?
That is, did the factory in Canada also fall into this numbering?

I haven't had a chance to go back through my stuff to dig up all the numbers of the Bellett's that have been in my possession over the years, but here is the one I have now (chassis number, sorry don't have an engine number handy). PR20 4034327

Post subject:  Re: Bellett model updates & corresponding chassis numbers

Hey Doug,

Personally, I'm on sure if the LHD Belletts fell into the same numbering, but I think they might have.

The chassis numbering according to the start of this post is:

1965------- September_1964------- 4014933
1966------- September_1965------- 4042963

.... this would put yours somewhere between the two.... THEORETICALLY.

I was looking in my brochures and that one for the Bellett 1500S shows the car as a 1967, however it is still the old teardop pre-1966.5 model.

I'm wondering if CMI received a buttload of unfinished bodies to assemble and it just took them a while, given that they did not sell a huge amount.
