These are the low sections behind the rear wheels that often rust out in a Bellett.

AS indicated in another thread, I have approached a Restoration firm here to see if he will make replacement sections, both sides. [this guy is a genius in metal work. In his shop he had a 61 Maserati which he has almost finished re-making a whole new aluminium body for]

There seems to be some interest in this, and I talked to the guy yesterday and he is happy to quote for a number of them. If numbers are high enough, he will make up jigs which will help to keep the costs a bit lower.

I have to go back with my Sport next week so he can see what's involved, to give a quote. I need some reasonably firm intent to buy these, (subject to cost) so I can give him numbers to make and price.

At this point, I don't know how shipping will be arranged so that will be on top of the quoted price. And I think, rather than ask for left and right, will be done in pairs only.

The panel will most likely not come up to the crease line in the body as he told me the reverse curve involved would add a lot of extra cost. ie it will run up from the 'flange' at bottom to about the hole where the bumper bar bolts through. It would need to be MIG welded into the body, most likely. Another option is to have the top section of this replacement panel, swaged so it will fit under the edge of the joining panel to make welding a little easier..

So, please reply if you are seriously interested in these panels. (pair) Once I have numbers I will get the quote. Only then will you need to commit yourself. Please don't say yes if you don't want to pay more than '25c' for the panels......... you get the idea.

What a good idea Glenn, I reckon they would save some time, especially for anyone paying others to do their bodywork. There is value there. Any ballpark on a pair?
Thanks for doing the legwork here.
Cheers, Matt

ok. Dave
on the list

no idea on costs as yet. He charges by the hour, but will quote us on sets once he sees the actual panel on my car.
With mutiple pairs, he can make a wood pattern and make them faster.

Yes please im in for a pair if we are talking a few hundred dollars, don't know if that's a reasonable expectation or not but let us know when you get an idea of price.

Add a pair for me please Glenn, but a little higher than your line would be good but not an issue if it adds too much to the quote. Thanks for your effort.

the inner part is not too hard to cobble up Dave, and it's not on show either.

Hi Craig

all noted.....i am hoping with a reasonable number, he might be ok for cost. Will leave it a while to see how many are liekly starters, then go see him again with the Sport as 'pattern'

Once he sees it, will get it as high as possible consistent with price

I spoke to another restoration place today at Melb Hotrod Show.
They don't do 'quantity' though. But i was impressed with the guy and his work. Maybe could drop off the spare Sport and get it back all restored !!!! :) :)

This guy mentioned that he knows somebody who makes custom low use press tools for making small items like these panels. However, final piece part price is likely to be fairly high.

OK the news......

for 5 sets, the cost is $130.00 per side, CASH. Plus postage

LENGTH:
They will NOT extend right to the rear flange (they don't rust there normally and it would add huge cost as the panel gets complex there.)
They will stop approx where the bumper bolt hole is, lengthwise. At the front edge they will have the flange ready to spot or plug weld into the body.

Height:
will run up to about 70mm below the crease line in the body. He explained that any higher, would cause a lot of distortion when welding.
(unless they were to extend up the centre of the crease line but again would add a lot of cost.)

Any less than 5 sets, cost will go up even more.

This guy is pretty good. He has appeared on CH31 doing repair videos. But, I can't take any responsibility for what is produced. I am only the messenger. He will make a pattern from my car.

I am doing the running around and there is no payment to me at all. (ie I am not marking these up!) That is the price he is asking.

Those who expressed interest, please advise yes or no. I don't want to carry the can for those who say 'yes' then later say they don't want them, so think it over carefully before commiting.

If we don't have 5 positives, then the whole deal is off. And it's a once only 'offer'.
Payment will be upfront.

Thanks for your efforts Glenn
YES from me

So are they available as a LH and/or RH at $130 each or still as a pair only (1LH 1RH) at $260 (+ postage of course)

YES for a PAIR regardless, just asking the question.

How's the cash going to work?
Do we EFT to you then you pay cash to him? (that's if the numbers come in of course)

He 'might' do odd ones but still need the pairs preferably. I think its better to do pairs anyway as most cars will need both.

Once its all ready to go, I guess easiest is to EFT to me and i will make one payment to him. ( and I won't skip town with the money ;) )

Postage will be on top of this of course. I will have to find suitable boxes from post offcie probably and get actual post cost also. Unknown until i have weight of them etc.
