claws wrote: More metal cleaning today and rust treatment, ready for sealer. When you cleaned and treated the metal. How did you clean it and what is the product that you used.? The reason why I'm asking is that I'm at a similar stage of prep on my convertible body. I thought I was seeing "double" when you put your pic's up. Although. You have a roof and I haven't. Dave. |

Thanks claws. Sunday should be good. Will be away for a couple of days. Be back then. KB. Have photos on USB. Time permitting I am endeavoring to see if I can start a new post on the work thus far and then continue. Nearly every panel has to be repaired due to it having been in a bingle at some time of its life. Rust in the usual places. Small creases and dents not beaten out. Just filled with bog. Getting there. Slow. At least all the suspension and brakes are ready. Dave. |

Cleaning metal started with combo of sanding discs, pads on sanders, grinders, wire wheels. Wire wheels good for getting into spot welds. Rust treated with an acid rust cleaner, (wearing long acid proof rubber gloves)applied then rubbed into areas turning black with sandpaper. Then wiped clean with a damp rag and dried immediately with dry rags. whole process repeated where rust still on metal. Some small bits of rust had to be removed with a die grinder. If any acid is left on metal it will turn white when it dries. It needs to be washed off and dried. Where parts were left for a few days without sealing i repeated acid treatment before sealing and then cleaned metal with acetone then was sprayed with the apoxy coating. I found that having as many different type and size sanding discs, pads, wire wheels as possible made the job easier. Most of these products have come from a business called Crash Supplies in Adelaide, don’t know if that is a an Australia wide chain. I did get a few bits from super cheap auto parts but they have only a pretty basic range compared to a proper auto body repair supplies.

I've been using 3M rust dissolver before I puttied the damaged area. Similar process as to your product, but has to be cleaned and puttied or sealed within 20 minutes. I won't be using the 3M, I will be using a product called bondall Ranex. This is industrial strength rust buster. Similar process, but can leave it to completely dry. I'm going to give it a day. Re clean again and then prepsol or acetone it. Redback is right in calling those wire brushes "wheels of death". I wore a welding jacket when I used one of them. The wires broke off and speared into the jacket. Lucky I was also wearing glasses as one strand also speared into my left ear. The left pokes out further than my right. Halfa' wingnut you could say. I've gone back to using twist knot brushes. Thanks for the info. Will be following your 'Resto' with interest. Dave. |
