I would be checking that there are no water pump studs into the head otherwise it is probably just stuck and I would give it a gentle prise and see if there is any movement...............

Yeah, I'm not sure if the top stud goes into the head without looking.
Sometimes the two studs that protrude from the block through the head can rust into the holes, I'd put plenty of penno on them & let it soak for a while. Then knock a wood chisel in between the head & block near the studs to lever it up. Very likely just stuck.

Let us know how you get on,
Cheers, Matt.

Spin it around on the starter with the plugs in; compression will do the trick ......

tried useing the compression to lift it up it didint work. But just playing around has freed the head from the block, but it is still not wanting to slide up and over the two studs. My neighbour has sujested using heat. Heat up the area of the stud on the head.Is that a good idea or will it crack the head.

the head is cast, so you should not do any damage by heating it a small amount. but lots of WD40 ect should get it loose

I've heard of guys using an engine crane to get the head off.... and just about lifting the entire car up in the process...

Good to hear you got it off!

Cheers,

Dave

yeah. we did that with a mazda 626. and smashed the other half of the head bolt down against the remaining seized section and it moved 1mm every 3 or 4 belts! the broken head stud had twisted 1.5 times before snapping!!

all jolly good fun..
