1964 Prince Super Miler Preservation

Post by KJB »

For those interested in Classic Japanese Commercial Vehicles (that includes Wasps and Elfs by the way....)
A couple of pics. of my 1964 Prince Super Miler which I have just finished preserving/restoring. I am taking it to the 2015 Clunes (Vic.) Historic Truck Show in a weeks time. It has been a 4 or 5 year very "part time " project but I reckon "worth it".
An example of a forgotten Japanese Commercial Vehicle , in fact most people have never seen or heard of them..!

Davo,
Do not know any import figures. As for those remaining , maybe 2 or 3 in sheds ( rumours ) in various condition ( and probably Milers not Super Milers - Milers are more the equivilent of a Toyote Lite Stout and the Super Miler the equivilent of a Toyota Stout . ) but I only know of 1 Super Miler (apart from my own ) and it is very rusty and past restoration but still driveable .

A point of interest - the Prince trucks (Milers and Clippers ) and cars (Skyline GT ) that were fitted with Limited Slip Diffs. from new were delivered with orange painted rear axles. L.S.D's were virtually unheard of in the early '60's. I suppose that by painting these diffs orange it caught buyers attention and caused them to enquire about the colour and then have the salesman explain the benefits of an L.S.D..

Looks very nice, Kerry. I am one of those who have heard of them as my father had one for travel to work from Adelaide to the outback as he was a travelling mechanic. I remember him saying that it was pretty good in outback mud with the huge diff. With the diff lock people were amazed at times that he actually arrived at their station over the muddy roads. However, one drawback with the diff lock and no drive to the front wheels was that it didn't like turning corners in the mud and would just plough straight ahead. Don't suppose you will be putting yours through such rigorous testing. His was a bark blue with a tub, not a tray.

You have him finished! Fantastic, mate!
And thats the right idea, take him to a show and get lots of puzzled people coming up for a chat.

Yours is the only one I've seen, but I do remember seeing those distonctive diagonal lights back in the day.
Goodonya,
Matt.

My Prince Super Miler at the 2015 Clunes Historic Truck Show .On show next to the Miler was a rare 3 wheeler Scammel (used for shifting trailers around at wharves and factories - before palletts and shipping containers came into vogue ) The Prince attracted alot of interest mainly because most people had never heard of or seen a Prince truck before. One felloow was quite emphatic that it was really built by Toyota!!!!!
I also showed my 1971 Honda CT70. Even Harley riders like it!
A very big showing of historic trucks , cars, classic caravans , tractors and a few bikes. I took my caravan and stayed overnight (many do this ) - great country iinformal atmosphere amongst people with common interests. Does not get much better.
The Forum is a bit quiet at the moment so I thought this report might add a bit of interest , I know Davo will read it1
