Rod google your area and someone will nolothane inject them. basicly the screw the grease nipple out and pump warm nolothane in you wont have to remove them from the car.

There's a guy who can do them over here, but it would involve getting them off, sending them here, getting him onto them then getting them back; unsure we can pull that off in the short term.

Has anyone got tie-rod ends they can lend/sell/give to Rod? I'll check my stash tomorrow; fortuitously, I'm going to my parts stash (which is not at my house) anyway.

I did a heap of work there back in June and took a stock-take of something like 7 differentials, but can't tell you how many tie rod ends we have!

The guy can do ball joints and tie rod ends and says he has even done them on the old State Transit Authority buses, but he is getting on a bit and once he drops off the perch, I have no idea.

I have a plan around this... because we can't keep stumbling on with zero to little parts stash for those things that come up when you least expect it.

The problem is sending some is ok but until they are fitted no one knows if they are any better ? getting another set done and posting them would be the best option but time

used to be a guy called Mike Quinn here in adelaide that used to strip and rebuild tie rods and ball joints, not sure if he is still about though. was located somewhere in richmond near the go-kart place on Deacon ave.
used him a few times where i used to work for unobtainable stuff, he was not quick but the product was good.

Awesome that Farmer is chasing NOS for you.

I went to my parts stash; no idea if they are any good but I got about 4 I think. The rubbers are mostly rooted though.

If you want me to express post 'em to you I will, but make sure you keep the oldies and bring them with you; they may be restorable.

There's also an old guy down Hallett Cove way (for reference, for the SA locals) and he was the guy I was going to hit up.

Unsure what his turnaround is, but if we can get a stash of oldies and replenish them, that's what we need!

Goodonya Dave. There is someone doing the repairs up here - Gary Carter had his 117 ball joints done. So far they are working fine.

I've made an enquiry and am waiting for an answer. Hopefully soon.

My only suggestion is to try some used ones. Generally if they're worn the ball is pretty loose. You can put a pair of multigrips across the base to the end of the thread and squeeze. If it doesn't sqash in too much its fine. But the rego guy will probably want intact boots.
Perhaps you could get the ends Dave's offered.

Here is a link to a store that sells many things, including tie rod end boots. I got a pair of them for the Florian for $5.95. They are a good supplier. You will need to measure the old boots to match up the size.

boots are available aftermarket just need to know sizes of both ends, i found the boot from the tie rod from the rear of a vx commodore was near on identical to the outer rack end boot of a bellett (also a camira rack boot is near on identical to the other part of the boot but no-one seems to stock it!), i havent tried too many of the aftermarket boots but if i have to change a ball joint or tie rod end at work i generally keep the boots just in case they fit something else!
Dave feel free to share the name of the guy you know that reconditions ball joints/tie rod ends, the more info the better!

Rack ends are adjustable Rod pull back the rack boot there is a nut and a lock nut. The lock nut has a grub screw in it remove the grub screw and remember where it came from you will need to do full a revolution so the grub screw lines up again on the lock nut [If I remember rightly], 1 rotation should be enough do not tighten it until it is tight inside is a detent spring and ball. If it is tight or tightens I have put a washer behind the spring seat. If it tightens the spring has no load.

As Gregs has pointed out 1 Rev is required to line up the groove in the the top of the thread.

My question is do you need to lock it up with the grub screw?

I was fiddling with this on Saturday winding it in and out to get it not too tight to bind up but free enough to allow some movement.

Flying it has run out of detent tension. loosen the lock nut and unscrew the cap end inside you will find a ball bearing and a detent spring. I put a washer or 2 at the base of the detent spring this makes the spring longer this will now make it work the way you want it as it will not bind if it's too tight and if you need half a turn you are only putting a little more preload on the spring. And the grub screw will fit again. At this stage tightening it does nothing at all. If you don't want to be as rough as me buy a longer spring but that will open a new can of worms as the tension ratio is unknown.
