Re: Another water pump on Ebay
Yeh had me worried haha so went and pulled the pump off the deluxe . The deluxe pump has one less bolt holding the backing plate on but the rest is identical. Double checked on the other bellett it has 2 bolts holding the plate .so not sure what the deal is there .

Re: Another water pump on Ebay
Without being cryptic, there's some important differences between the top one and a Bellett pump from memory...we should play spot the difference! I don't think that one will work on an OHC Bellett, but I may be wrong.
Repair kits I've found have their perils...3 different types of seals within PR20 Bellett pumps (carbon, cork and steel sealing faces). Later pumps also have wider bearings, longer shafts and different impellors which operate at a different flow rates.
Not sure what the difference in bolts for backing plates means, but would be interested to find out. Sorry sdoubleb, didn't mean to scare you! The Cypress pump and the Bellett look very similar, yes, so probably good, but safest to check critical dimensions before buying just to make sure.

Not sure if this helps, the G180ss OHC engine has a threaded boss on the side of the outlet pipe.degruch wrote:Without being cryptic, there's some important differences between the top one and a Bellett pump from memory...we should play spot the difference! Re: Another water pump on Ebay
Thanks Degruch
This answers one of my long standing questions....
The water pump service/repair kit in Cypres is for the late model pump and therefore had the thicker bearing and seal
Cheers

Re: Another water pump on Ebay
Are you sure James? I mentioned the pump doesn't look right as I thought it looked taller...bit there's not much difference. If it does fit the same bolts, since it's an entire assembly, I wonder if it can be made to fit if it is in fact too tall (i.e. adapter for belt, different fan)?

Re: Another water pump on Ebay
I am certain the pump repair kit has the thicker bearing assembly and seal as it is for the 1969 model
As in the picture
Also I have the same kit and I measured it
Too big for my early model spare pump housing
The pump for sale is complete and should fit ....... Should
The different I noticed is that in my G161 block as per postings has a second 10mm hole for heater circuit + cooling 1st piston
In a spare '68-69 sedan block I have, there is another square hole and in the picture above you can see its impression on the backing plate
This would make adapting an electric water pump a bit more tricky than the way I did

Re: Another water pump on Ebay
Well, I hope it's the right one mate. But yeah, gotta be careful with these things...the variations are very slight.
James, yes there is definitely a difference in PR20 pumps, so you're probably right that it occurs '68-'69-ish. Would be nice to know for sure!

Heres the rear of a 173 202 Holden 6 pump.
Looks like the impeller fits inside the block ?

Re: Another water pump on Ebay
The impeller looks a tad large, but it's hard to tell from the photo, of course. You're right though, these are a similar design that will be on the market forever, so there'll always be supply if it can be adapted.
I think the critical dimensions would be the height of the shaft and size/design of the impeller. The impeller may (most likely) be removable and could be replaced with an original or repro part, but some may be sweated on.
Bill, who did my engine rebuild, had reams and reams of books showing critical dimensions of millions of parts, he seemed to have a way of accessing this information. He's closed up shop, however, but there must be a way to find out without having to purchase other pumps? At the time though, we found nothing similar, so there's no straight swap.

Re: Another water pump on Ebay
yes a straight swap would be like winning Lottery.... but like the tie rod ends, there must be something out there that could be adapted in my view. The trick to that is just how easy that might be in practice. But finding a pump that still sells in reasonable numbers (for an old design) will be the 1st step..degruch wrote:The impeller looks a tad large, but it's hard to tell from the photo, of course.
