I've nearly finished the process of rebuilding the diff on the GT, and thought about checking the rear wheel bearings. Just as well - there's a bit of wobble in the axle shaft, so the bearings definitely need replacement after about 350,000 km and over 50 years!!!!
Do you still have 2 of these sleeves in your collection? There is a good chance that the originals will get destroyed trying to remove them. Have tried 4x threaded rods and a gas torch but only managed to strip the threads. Need to find someone with a decent press and make up a collet to get the old sleeve off.

Another SMALL problem has also arisen - trying to get the flange off the second rear axle. It is firmly rusted on. Can't get the axle out without first removing this flange. Have had a bearing puller on it under max pressure with a 50cm spanner, WD40, heat and hammer/chisel but it still refuses to budge. Next trick is to try a mix of acid and acetone to penetrate and hopefully dissolve some rust on the splines.
Anybody got some good ideas/tricks to get this @#^$%&T flange off. I'm considering rigging up a small hydraulic house jack on it to get more pressure but also risk doing some damage to the flange or the threaded part of the axle.
I assume you are talking about the flange on the end of the axle that bolts to the diff. If all that fails I would suggest taking out the swing arm completely and you should be able to get a collar around the axle near the flange put it in the press and then press it out. It sounds like a big job to take the arm out but it is not that bad. You should not have to strip the swing arm down to do this.

You're right Peter, it is this flange. Taking out the swing arm is the last resort I guess, not something I wanted to do yet. I will persevere with dripping the acid/acetone mix onto the end of the spline several times a day for a while and try the bearing puller again or the house levelling jack.
Will let you know what happens.
